What a fabulous event! Where else can you sample extraordinary food from extraordinary restaurants all in one place, all in one night? Add to that a ton of wineries and you have yourself an incredible evening of food and drink. The Los Angeles Food and Wine Festival took over Grand Avenue in DTLA and rolled out the red carpet for star chefs who personally served up their delicious small plates. It was a great opportunity to meet and schmooze with the chefs who cheerily handed out their dishes despite the super hot and uncharacteristic muggy weather. Saturday night was capped by Questlove and The Roots who played non-stop for almost two brilliant hours.
Chatting with the chefs, I got a few tidbits about new restaurant openings in the offing. Curtis Stone, who is the consummate hospitality host, is opening a new restaurant with his brother Luke who just moved here from Australia with his wife and kids. They’re taking over The Mercantile space on Sunset, a beautiful old building, where Kris Morningstar served up some magical meals before moving on to Ray’s & Stark, Blue Velvet and now Terrine. Happening sometime in 2016.
Word from Alvin Cailin said he he was opening another Eggslut in some mysterious location near Venice and/or Santa Monica. He was pretty cryptic about its location. Anyway, it’s on the westside, aiming for October.
And Steve Samson, of Sotto, with who I had a most interesting chat about running a restaurant in this competitive environment (interview about this coming soon), is opening a new restaurant called Rosso Blu in DTLA this fall…obviously Italian!
We have a plethora of exciting food coming our way. Step up that exercising!
How lucky are we to be in L.A. at the vortex of innovative, creative cooking and impressive new restaurants. Must be something in the water. So, calendar next year for the L.A Food and Wine Festival as a wonderful way to sample all the new food that will be showing up here over the coming year.
Salut and Bon Appétit!
