Fresh hops

Fall is the best time of the year for hopheads. Today almost all American hops are grown in just three states — Washington, Oregon and Idaho — and right now, hops are being harvested throughout the Pacific Northwest.

California used to grow a lot of hops, beginning near Sacramento around 1854 and extending into Mendocino, Sonoma, Napa and even Santa Clara. In fact, between 1915 and 1922, California was the leading hop producer in the country, supplying brewers with roughly half of all American hops. But Prohibition destroyed the California hop industry and by the 1960s, it had all but disappeared. Remnants of California’s hop legacy still can be seen in town names like Hopland and even wineries like Hop Kiln (a building where hops are dried).
