Billy Busch’s deep pockets help finance beer startup

The man behind the latest St. Louis beer has a few advantages over the hundreds of entrepreneurs who have tried to crack into the brewing business in recent years.

William K. “Billy” Busch has the name, of course, and contacts throughout the nation’s network of independently owned beer distributorships.

But if his ambitious plan to make national brands out of Kräftig Lager and Kräftig Light is to succeed, it may require Busch to dig deeply into his large personal fortune.

The size of Busch’s wealth isn’t publicly known, but some records suggest Busch has plenty of money to invest in his new company.

When Gussie Busch died in 1989, he left about 35 million shares of Anheuser-Busch stock — then valued at about $1.5 billion — to more than 20 heirs and trusts, though the exact breakdown was never made public.
