Larry Sidor, brewmaster at one of the country’s most popular craft breweries, will leave Deschutes by year’s end to start his own brewery.

He came to the Bend, Ore., operation after 23 years with Olympia. His eight years as Deschutes’ top brewer marked an era of growth and creative ferment. Deschutes is now the country’s fifth largest craft brewery, trailing only Boston Beer Co., Sierra Nevada, New Belgium and Spoetzl.

During Sidor’s tenure, Deschutes issued some of its most popular and influential beers: The Abyss, The Dissident, Inversion IPA, Hop in the Dark, Red Chair Northwest Pale Ale and others.

“His contributions to the brewery are innumerable,” said Gary Fish, Deschutes’ founder and CEO, “and he will be missed by us all.”

In a statement released by the brewery, Sidor thanked Fish and the Deschutes’ team for “incredible” years.

Deschutes is now conducting a nationwide search for Sidor’s replacement.
