City officials say they may lift a longtime ban on alcohol in Kit Carson Park to allow Stone Brewing Co. to take over concessions in the park’s Adult Softball Complex, amphitheater and the picnic area next to the Queen Califia sculpture.
Adding Stone’s popular beer and food would make those mostly underused attractions much more popular with residents, city officials said. In addition, Stone plans to spend $250,000 upgrading the softball and concession areas, chief executive Greg Koch said.
“It’s the idea of taking a gem and polishing it up,” Koch said.
But City Council members said allowing alcohol sales and consumption in the city’s most popular family recreation park would be a delicate situation. In addition, three schools are near the park: LR Green Elementary, Bear Valley Middle School and San Pasqual High School.
Council members expressed confidence that Stone would be conscientious about prohibiting alcohol access to minors, but said their decision about lifting the ban would probably come down to feedback from the public.
Two community leaders have already raised concerns.
