Beer

Dump for Independents, which is protesting Motion 414 in Wisconsin’s recently passed 2011-13 budget.

How much beer will you be dumping?

Between two and three barrels.

What brands?

Miller Lite, Leinenkugel’s and Blue Moon.

What message are you hoping to send?

We’re really hoping to kind of educate people on what’s going on as far as the legislation that was recently passed that kind of prohibits a lot of the smaller craft brewers in the state from obtaining licences and being able to self-distribute the way that they have been for the last 70 years.

Wisconsin has been a very beer-friendly state up until the passing of the legislation that just kind of got snuck in the back door.

How big of a part of Wisconsin beer culture are the craft beers?

It’s huge. You look at some of the statistics as far as tourism in the state, and one of the biggest draws is the brewers. So many people come to Wisconsin because we’re known for beer, cheese and brats. People want to come and they want to experience the beers that we have. It’s become a very big industry in the state, and this is kind of big step in the wrong direction.

In terms of demand for mass-produced beers, how do expect the dumping to affect your business, if at all?

Very little. Most of our patrons come because we are a craft beer bar. Of the 38 beers on tap, only two of them are considered domestic beers. It gets kind of gray with the Blue Moon and Leinenkugel’s products, but those are beers that are owned by MillerCoors, they’re subsidiaries, and they’re also going to be taken off (the beer selection) because of this.
