Diageo to create 1,000 jobs and splash out £1bn to expand, as Asia, Africa and South America get the taste for Scotch whisky.
Diageo is to invest £1billion in its Scotch whisky production over the next five years to meet growing demand from the emerging markets of Asia, Latin America and Africa.
The move will create nearly 1,000 jobs, the group said, including 100 Diageo jobs, some 250 positions in the construction sector and up to 500 from the ‘knock-on-effect’ on the Scottish economy.
The group, for which Scotch is the principal growth category, representing 23 per cent of the sales volumes and 27 per cent of net sales value, will build a new distillery, expand some of its existing 28 distilleries and create a new warehouse space.
It shipped 17.8million cases of Johnnie Walker in the year to June 30 2011, 4.6million cases of J&B and 1.5million cases of Buchanan’s.
The group was unable to confirm specific locations for the new facilities but it is understood to be looking in the Speyside and Highland areas and planning applications should be lodged later this summer.
A number of emerging markets are driving the growth in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe, while there are still opportunities in developed markets including the US.
