That’s the suggestion of one study that found ethically-minded investors have historically avoided buying shares in the alcohol and cigarette industry because, ultimately, it fuels user addiction.
But those who’ve kicked their conscience to the kerb have enjoyed high returns as a result, new research shows.
Brewers and distillers have been some of the best performing British shares in the last 115 year, turning £1 into £243,152, according to a study for Credit Suisse by Elroy Dimson, Paul Marsh and Mike Staunton of London Business School.
