indexAs you may know, Prohibition was repealed in 1933.

That means it’s been more than 80 years since Americans abandoned the catastrophic folly that fueled organized crime and turned otherwise law-abiding folks with a taste for liquor into outlaws.

Yet many states – yes, I’m including Virginia – continue to treat alcohol as a vaguely sinful substance, even as state coffers swell from its sale.

Not only is the Old Dominion saddled with sterile state-run liquor stores, but the laws and regulations that control the distribution of booze are longer than Leviticus.

Now for the good news: Virginia’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Department is introducing a host of changes to liquor regulations after an arduous process that involved multiple public comment periods, vetting by several government agencies and approval by the governor.

Some of the modifications took effect in December and others will go live this month or in February.
