Diplomatic Crisis? Too Much Wine

Have you ever wondered what kind of wine diplomats drink at fancy dinner parties as they discuss lofty topics like nuclear non-proliferation and free trade agreements? A recent survey by Japan’s Board of Audit offers a glimpse.
As part of its broader effort to uncover wasteful spending at Japanese embassies and consulates around the world, the board looked at the stocks and treatments of wine and other alcoholic beverages kept at 51 of Tokyo’s bigger overseas outposts.
At most embassies, stocks of wine ranged from reasonable levels of 0.5 to (the more excessive) five times the amount of their annual consumption, but there were some exceptions. The top hording prize went to the Permanent Representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The location? Paris, of course.
