The global alcoholic drinks industry is expected to exceed $1 trillion in 2014, according to MarketLine, with a 10 percent increase in market volume that is predicted to exceed 231 billion liters by 2016.
Data from the U.S. Census bureau shows that Illinois had the seventh-highest alcohol beverage tax revenue in the nation in 2011, the latest statistics were available, and the highest among the Great Lakes states. Texas ($871 million) and Florida ($560 million) topped the list nationally.
Illinois was also a top-five state in wine sales, with 14 million cases sold.
“All of our available alcohol licenses are filled,” said Mount Vernon City Manager Ron Neibert. “The most impact we’ll get in future requests will likely be restaurant licenses.”
