IndustryVirginia has agreed to allow advertising of alcoholic beverages on billboards and store windows under a consent decree quietly signed almost six weeks ago with a billboard advertising company that had sued the state.
The news came as a surprise this week to Virginia legislators, who have summoned Alcoholic Beverage Control officials to a briefing today at the General Assembly.
“The current policy of Virginia is that alcohol ads can’t be seen from the street,” said Del. G. Glenn Oder, R-Newport News, chairman of the House General Laws subcommittee that oversees ABC laws. “This is a radical departure from that policy.”
