Virginia’s beer and wine wholesalers have turned on the tap for political donations to key legislators in the debate over Gov. Bob McDonnell’s bid to privatize Virginia’s liquor monopoly.
The Virginia Public Access Project today reported political donations in the third quarter that showed state beer and wine wholesalers giving more than $71,000 to legislators, including $60,000 to two people — House Speaker William J. Howell, R-Stafford, and Senate Majority Leader Richard L. Saslaw, D-Fairfax.
Howell and Saslaw stand to play pivotal roles in the coming debate over the governor’s plan to end the state’s monopoly over retail and wholesale liquor sales. Howell and Saslaw each received a total of $30,000 in the quarter from the Virginia Beer Wholesalers Association and Virginia Wine Wholesalers Association.
