10 Best Choices For National Rum Day – August 16!

In case you did not know it, Tuesday, August 16 is National Rum Day. There will be no parade, no nationally televised fireworks, no speech from the White House or Capital, and frankly, you will be left to celebrate this holiday on your own. I am here to help. A few months ago, I had the privilege of pre-sampling a new and very, very limited release of rum, Ron Abuelo Centuria, easily one of the finest ever bottled. I wrote about “The Best Rum I Ever Tasted,” at length, and it still holds that title. But the blend, made from various productions of Ron Abuelo’s house-aged rums up to 30 years old, was a onetime deal. A small amount was made to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary, with just 400 cases destined for the US, and it will never be available again.
The good news is there are plenty of other good rums, old and new, from Ron Abuelo and lots of other companies. All of the following are high-quality rums, which means you can (and usually should) drink them unadulterated. Most are best enjoyed neat, like single malt whiskies, but the lighter ones – and with rum, unlike whiskey, color is a fairly reliable indicator – won’t be insulted by a little ice. Most of what we think of as “rum drinks,” often colorful tiki bar concoctions, exist to hide the taste of mediocre rum, which is most rum sold in the US. The following National Rum Day suggestions, on the other hand, are the best of the best, comparable to fine whiskies or cognacs.
