The Perfect Jameson & Apple

Even if you’re not Irish, you still can become a leprechaun for a day by sampling a cocktail made with a wee dram of Irish whiskey.

One of the first names that come to mind is Bushmills (www.Bushmills.com), which is, sort of like St. Patrick, legendary in the land of shillelaghs, shamrocks and no snakes because it’s Ireland’s oldest distillery dating back to 1608.

A bestseller is Bushmills Original. Made with spring water and barley and then distilled three times, the taste is light-bodied and pleasant with notes of chocolate, vanilla, honey and ripe tropical fruits. The smokiness from peat that usually accompanies an Irish whiskey is markedly absent, so it makes a very clean, very smooth sipping whiskey. But don’t be afraid to try whiskey in cocktails for a Celtic twist.

1 ounces Bushmills Original Irish Whiskey
1 ounce honey
3 ounces hot water
Lemon wedge plucked with cloves

Place lemon wedge in a toddy glass. Pour whiskey and honey over lemon, and then fill with water.

1 ounces Bushmills Original Irish Whiskey
3 ounces hot coffee
1 to 2 teaspoons sugar
Slightly whipped heavy cream

Pour coffee into warmed glass mug. Add sugar to taste. Stir to dissolve. Add whiskey. Top with whipped cream, poured gently over the back of a spoon.
