a1The Cedar Ridge Winery and Distillery calls Johnson County, Iowa, home.

In a grain-rich state, the company is making a new single malt whiskey, apparently a first in Iowa.

It’s made from 100% malted barley and Cedar Ridge owner Jeff Quint says if they were in Scotland they’d be able to call it “scotch”.

He says Iowa produces more grain than any other state in the country, and most distilled spirits are made from grain…

(Quint) “Yet we import 100% of the spirits we drink in this state.”

Quint says it has taken years to come up with just the few barrels that they’ve been able to release so far…

(Quint) “Our goal is just to support the local market.”

More single malt whiskey is expected to be released later this year.
