Nine tips on how to make better drinks at home

There may be a recession on, but Americans are still drinking. They’re just doing more of it at home.

Sales of alcoholic beverages consumed somewhere other than the point of purchase, known in the industry as off-premise sales, have risen 21 percent since 2004 to almost $80 billion, according to market research company Mintel.

“People are hosting more at home. There’s an intimacy in that that people are looking for these days,” says Jason Burton of LAB 5702, which does marketing for the beverage industry.
