Thrilling trio: (From left) Havana Club Añejo Especial (a blend of rum that is aged up to five years), Havana Club Añejo Reserva (aged five to seven years) and Havana Club Añejo 7 Años, a seven-year-old golden rum that can rival even the best Scotch and cognac.

RUM has got such a bum deal. It’s one of the most popular spirits in the world, and some of the best rum can rival even the best that the whisky, cognac, tequila, and vodka categories have to offer.

Yet, more often than not, it is relegated to frivolous pop culture references about pirates and sometimes even downgraded to a mere accompaniment to a certain cola soft drink. Even yours truly was guilty of giving it short shrift – dismissing it to almost an afterthought in a story that was mostly about cachaça (which in my defence is technically a kind of rum as well).{Full story}
