Way to test the mettle of a bartender: ask for a classic Sidecar

Not to sound too curmudgeonly but what is with all these wet-behind-the-ears bartenders who don’t know the classic drinks? Listen, I think it’s swell that the newest generation of hip bartenders know how to flame an orange peel or make roasted lavender infused gin, but unless you know the old school cocktails I just can’t consider you all that skilled.
The way I test a bartender’s mettle is by asking for the epitome of spirited sophistication: the Sidecar (you Martini and Manhattan lovers can just shush up). If the bartender can’t properly concoct a Sidecar with all of its ingredients properly balanced then the owner needs to find someone new.
