A Wine App That Shows What Sommeliers Like to Drink

If you’ve ever wondered what some of the top sommeliers in New York are drinking during their nonworking hours, or perhaps even while they’re still on the floor, there’s an app that will help you find out.
The Delectable Wine app that allows users to photograph a wine label, upload a note and look at the notes of others is particularly popular with sommeliers—not to mention winemakers, merchants and even a few wine journalists.
Launched in September 2012 and upgraded several times, Delectable was initially targeted to wine professionals, according to Alex Fishman, the app’s 30-year-old founder and chief executive. But, as Mr. Fishman noted, Delectable has been adopted “organically” by casual wine drinkers, too. Mr. Fishman estimated that hundreds of thousands of wine drinkers visit Delectable each month, including 5,000 to 7,000 wine professionals, many of whom live in New York.
Mr. Fishman, a former executive of Palantir Technologies, was looking for a fresh challenge when he decided the wine industry was “ripe for improvement,” not to mention in need of a new app. He said he built Delectable “to democratize the wine industry” and to “leverage the signals from the community,” which in this case meant a huge collection of tasting notes to achieve his stated goal: “To make the world a more delicious place.”
