California produces its fair share of inexpensive Cabernet Sauvignon. You can almost throw a rock and hit drinkable California-labeled bottlings priced $12 or less, though it takes some looking to find ones at that price point with more definitive Cabernet character.

We upped our price point several bucks and handily found ones to recommend among 36 we tasted, including one from Napa Valley.

2008 Ancient Peaks Winery Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon ($16): This winery and its estate Margarita vineyard are owned by three partners, whose first vintage was 2005. Rich oak, with savory mineral hints backed by dark, dense fruit; powerful and full-bodied, firm tannins on the long finish. Includes 10 percent Syrah.
