Qantas first class passengers have been enjoying the world’s best airline red wine thanks to a small but prestigious local winery.

For the second year in a row the judges of the Cellar in the Sky Awards have decided that of all the great red wines served in first class on the world’s airlines, Murrumbateman’s Clonakilla shiraz viognier is the best.

Last year it was Clonakilla’s 2005 shiraz viognier which beat top wines from around the world. This year the 2006 shiraz viognier took out the award.

Clonakilla won on behalf of Qantas, which took out top prize in six categories from a field of 36 of the world’s best airlines. Clonakilla chief winemaker and CEO Tim Kirk was thrilled with the award.

“This is an amazing result,” he said.

“To win such a prestigious international award at all is fantastic. To win it two years in a row is just extraordinary.”
