Itsy-bitsy wineries of Santa Cruz deserve attention

The backyard wineries that produce fewer than a 100 cases of wine a year often don’t get the attention they deserve, but the people who never get the chance to taste the vintages may be the ones really missing out.
There are more than 70 wineries from Half Moon Bay to Mount Madonna and all but about four are considered boutique wineries, also called micro-wineries, said John Hibble, executive director of the Santa Cruz Mountain Winegrowers Association.
These small Santa Cruz Mountains wineries aren’t widely known because their production amounts are small and their distribution tends to remain local, he said. Among them: Silver Mountain Vineyards, Pelican Ranch Winery and Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard.
But these little winemakers are producing very high quality and interesting wines, Hibble said, so making the effort to find them can be very rewarding.
