Lake County wineries – going where Napa won’t…that's north

Lake County, which was once part of Napa County, now has 32 wineries.

Many Lake County wineries are headed in a direction not allowed in Napa County — to become destinations for events as well as wine producers.

Although Lake County wineries and growers, like those elsewhere, have been hit hard by the recession, the lower costs of property there have helped them sell grapes to thrifty customers.

“The economic dynamics are better here,” says Bryan Kane, who grows grapes in Lake County for his new Winery SF in San Francisco. “I couldn’t afford to do it in Napa, yet it has a very similar climate to St. Helena.”
