Oh NO! Shortage of champagne as producers caught empty

Makers had been badly hit by the “prosecco years” when drinkers turned to cheaper bottles of fizz such as the Italian sparkling wine and Spanish cava.
With the “feel-good factor” deserting consumers as the economic crisis started to bite, sales turned flat. In 2009 supermarkets were even offering brands such as Bollinger on a buy-one-get-one-free basis just to clear the shelves – a move that producers claimed devalued the drink.
They reacted by cutting the number of bottles they produced so they would not flood the market.
