Wineries in the United States are on track in 2011 to shatter last year’s record $1.14 billion in worldwide exports, according to the San Francisco-based Wine Institute, a California wine industry advocacy group.

The lastest numbers show exports totaling $1.139 billion, with a good chunk of additional sales figures still remaining.

Since the October numbers nearly equal last year’s totals, the U.S. wine industry is “clearly on track for another record,” said Gladys Horiuchi, Communications Manager for the Wine Institute. ”The last quarter is our biggest sales period,” she added.

Canada remains the number one country receiving U.S. wine exports with nearly $300 million in purchases thus far, a substantial increase over 2010′s total of roughly $242 million.

The United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Japan, China, and Germany make up the remaining top export destinations.
