Sherry cocktail competition brings out the best

Enough time has passed since New Year’s Eve that hopefully we can return to thoughts of tipple.

While I’d love to keep on my Champagne jag for another week, let’s turn instead to harder stuff for a moment. The finalists have been announced for one of the few drink battles that seem to always draw out the top talent — the Vinos de Jerez Cocktail Competition. Required ingredient? You guessed it.

San Francisco has always been ahead in using sherry in cocktails, and two worthy contenders have emerged this year: Reza Esmaili, one of our Bar Stars formerly of Conduit and now of Long Bar; and Carlo Splendorini of Gitane, perhaps the most sherry-loving bar around. Both have ample cred in using said fortified wine in their creations, and they can join the local chefs hoping to make a further case for sherry on the table.
